The Dorcas Learning Center is an open space, with furniture that can be moved or stacked as needed for a variety of collaborative projects, programs, and workshops.
Selected volunteers will be trained to guide and mentor people who use the Learning Lab equipment, as well as to ensure all equipment is in good working order.
Community mentors and DLC volunteers will meet with library staff quarterly to evaluate past projects, and to plan and collaborate on activities and events for the following six months.
Technology will include:
- Mobile work stations for collaborative technology classes;
- Promethean smart walls for collaborative brainstorming and streaming films
- Audio/video production equipment, green screen, and editing software, for creating weblogs and/or podcasts;
- Musical instruments, sheet music, and musical apps for new and experienced musicians, and to support the creation of new musical pieces;
- Devices for converting analog or magnetic audio/video [vinyl, audiotape, film, mini-disc] artifacts to accessible digital content;
- Large scanners for digital preservation projects;
- 3-D printers and laser cutters with supplies;
- Cricut craft cutter, and paper art supplies;
- Tools and resources for tinkering and invention;
- Dedicated Linux servers for coding practice, gaming, and gaming design;
- Virtual reality equipment;
- Robotics equipment;
- Plus spaces for textile arts; culinary arts; traditional arts and crafts; writing; performance arts; and organic community garden spaces.
