We did not have a balanced budget for 2019 because:
- We have increased paid hours for staff in accordance with Maine state law.
- The expenses related to 27 Main Street were not predictable for 2019 budget.
When such situations occur, we overestimate expenses and underestimate income.
In 2019, we did:
- Cutting expenses [buying fewer materials for circulation, creating low-cost programming
- Writing more grants for special projects and collections
- Increasing “ask amounts” from people who already support us
